Oscar N. Emly, a veteran of WWII, died peacefully on January 12 in Tacoma, WA, three days after reaching his 102nd birthday. Oscar was born in 1920 to a ND farm family and moved to Brookings, SD as a boy. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps as a communications specialist serving in the South Pacific. He received a bronze star for heroic service in the Philippines.
Oscar and Arlene Beckwith were married in 1946 and moved to Dell Rapids, SD in 1948 purchasing the downtown bakery. Under their management, the Dell Rapids Bakery became well-known for its baked-from-scratch pastries, fresh bread, and specialty cakes. They were influential in Dell Rapids, SD, for over forty years as business owners and community leaders. The family business also provided many local young people employment experience even if it meant pre-dawn hours!
After retirement, they enjoyed years of traveling and visiting friends and family. They lived ten years in Maple Grove, MN before moving to Tacoma, WA.
Oscar is preceded in death by his wife, Arlene and their son Wayne. He is survived by six children: Kenneth (Valerie) Emly, Kathryn (James) Roskens, Mark (Maxine) Emly, Carole (Curt) Buchholz, Audrey (Robert) Welch and Virginia Emly; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and a sister Altha Touzinsky.
Throughout his adulthood, whether serving in the military, at the Baptist Church, within family or community, Oscar demonstrated a respect for all persons. He will be remembered as a man of character, imbued with a humble spirit and a servant’s heart.
