Norman Hauglid was born on a farm east of Jasper, MN, the son of Albert and Alice (Lodahl) Hauglid on October 23, 1924, the middle child of nine children. At the age of 7, he went to live with his uncle Joe and aunt Alma Collins north of Dell Rapids where Norm could follow his dream of living on a farm, being taught all about the world of agriculture, getting his hands dirty and becoming a successful farmer.
While attending St. Mary Catholic School, Norm met Rosemary Eulberg and married his high school sweetheart on September 19, 1946, embracing their love for 71 years until Rosemary passed in 2017. Married at St. Mary Catholic Church, the couple remained active and faithful servants of the Lord all their lives.
In 1949, Norm rode a boxcar to Chicago to attend the International Livestock Expo with his short horned bull. The bull was awarded the Grand Champion of all breeds and sold for $3000. In the 1970’s Norm sent a captioned picture to the Reader’s Digest quoting: “The only piece of equipment John Deere doesn’t stand behind is their manure spreader!” This article was published a short time later! Norm was a board member of the Dell Rapids COOP Lumber, Dell Rapids Community Hospital Board and the Moody County Soil Conservation Board.
Safford, AZ was the Hauglid’s southern home in the winter for over 25 years and the enjoyed each year they “went south.” Their door was always open for visitors; they enjoyed golfing, dune bugging, dancing and their Friday night Community Room gatherings. Norman enjoyed taking classes at the college to expand his expertise in his stain glass skills. Along with stain glass, at the farm in his workshop, you could find him working on a hope chest for a grandchild’s wedding gift or another wood project requested by someone. Taking his boat out for a fishing excursion was a highlight for him too.
Norm and Rosemary were the parents of eight children; Greg (Jo), Dell Rapids, Alice Cordell, Atlanta, GA, Steven (deceased 1956), Don (Mary Ann), Tulsa, OK, Nancy (deceased 2019), Larry (Tena), Dell Rapids, John (Beck) and Mark (Joni) both of Colman; 18 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; one great, great-granddaughter; brother-in-law Roger Eulberg, Salt Lake City, UT.
Norm is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary; son Steven; daughter Nancy; three infant grandchildren, Jennifer, Jesse and Jordon Hauglid; 4 brothers, Alfred Sr., Virgil, Merle, Lester (infant); 4 sisters, Gladys Schultz, Lorraine Winter, Lucille Dueth and Leona Stephenson.
Norm has requested that any memorials be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids.
