Gene “Bud” Hoffman

Gene “Bud” Hoffman, 85 of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial was at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment was in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation was on Sunday, November 26, 2023 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. with the Christian Wake Service at 4 p.m. at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home.
Eugene “Bud” Hoffman was born on August 23, 1938 at Alexandria, the son of Louis and Cecelia (Arend) Hoffman. He grew up in Bridgewater, moving to a farm near Dell Rapids in the 3rd grade. He attended St. Mary’s School where he participated in basketball and graduated in 1956. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was aboard the USS Hancock. He returned home to the family farm. He was employed at Gage Brothers Concrete until 1961. Through friends, he met Jeannine Burton and they were married on October 21, 1961. They enjoyed dancing at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls, members of a card club for 51 years and attended many sport activities.
They raised their family on the home farm west of Dell Rapids for 40 years. They were blessed with three children. They raised crops and livestock. Gene was a farmer at heart. Even after moving to town in 1977, he drove his pickup to farm daily.
He enjoyed living in town and especially friendships built over coffee at T&C. Gene could be found at most sporting events at SMHS and DRHS, depending upon where his grandchildren were participating in basketball, volleyball, baseball and football. Gene and Jeannie were awarded Boosters of the Year in 2017 for DRHS.
Proud to have shared in life are his wife of 62 years, Jeannie; children Kurt (Mary) Hoffman, Robert (Stacy) Hoffman and Pam (Tom) Kolbeck all of Dell Rapids; grandchildren Kyle (Kim) Hoffman, Lee Hoffman, Nick (Rochelle) Hoffman, Arial Hoffman, Ravyn Hoffman, Courtney (Tyler) Cavigielli, Matt Kolbeck (Courtney Kurtz) and Tate Kolbeck; great-grandchildren, Leighton Macdonald, Trinity Hoffman, Malia Hoffman, Kinsley Cavigielli; sister Romana Entringer.
Gene was proceeded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jim Entringer.
