Eric Allan Magnuson was born on September 26, 1965, the second of two children born to Gary S. and Linda May (Saunders) Magnuson. Eric’s life was marked by a passion for helping others, unwavering faith, and an enduring spirit of kindness that touched the hearts of many.
As a young man, Eric excelled academically and socially at Millard South High School, graduating in 1984. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he graduated with a degree in education. He began his teaching career in Plattsmouth, where he taught for two years in the only remaining one-room schoolhouse in the state. During this time, he was united in marriage to Lisa Phipps, which ended in divorced. They first made their home in Nebraska and were blessed with three children, Moriah, Ethan and Lydia. Eventually, the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where Eric assumed a role at Southeast Technical College, guiding developmentally delayed adults in vocational skills and later he worked with troubled youth at local children’s homes.
After receiving his master’s degree, from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, Eric became a much-loved special education teacher within the Dell Rapids school district. For many years he was a beacon of hope and a source of encouragement, fostering an environment that allowed each student to thrive. In 2022, Eric opted for early retirement and moved to Lowry, MN to be closer to family. Recently, Eric had taken a part-time job at Goodwill in Alexandria where he enjoyed interacting with co-workers and customers.
A man of great faith, Eric’s spiritual life was ever-present. He grew up attending Center Baptist Church in Omaha where he participated in their puppet ministry during high school and later served as a youth minister. Eric’s commitment to sharing his faith followed him with each move, and he became active in the congregations he joined, especially at Quarry Rock Church in Dell Rapids, where he was on the children’s ministry team and an important part for several years with Del Rapids VBS program. Most recently, he had become a cherished member of the Lowry Community Covenant Church in Lowry.
His sudden departure has left a void that will be felt deeply by all, yet the memory of his laughter, his deep and abiding kindness, and his unwavering commitment to his faith and family will remain as a beacon of light.
Eric is survived by his children Moriah (Julio) Hernandez of Sioux Falls, SD; Ethan (Cassie) Magnuson of Dell Rapids, SD; Lydia Magnuson of Baltic, SD; and his cherished grandchildren Rebecca, Aleah, and Theodore. He is also survived by his father and stepmother, Gary and Sheila Magnuson of Lowry; sister, Pam (Lynn) Cooper of Lincoln, NE; stepsister, Crystal (Jason) Kraska; stepbrother, Kyle Haack; nieces and nephews, Cale and Bryce (Renee) Cooper, Trysten (Hannah) Gapp and Vayden Gapp, and Liberty Haack; extended family, and a host of friends and former students whose lives he enriched.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother, Linda Magnuson in 1999.
